alice’s best tips: break your bad eating habits

i know. it’s hard. that’s why they’re called “habits”, right? but the least you can do is try, and here are some tips to try!

1. you eat late at night
now, eating late isn’t necessarily bad. it’s bad if late night snacks push you over your calorie limit or if you eat just as you’re about to go to sleep. if you eat dinner at 5pm, a little snack around 8pm isn’t bad at all! but if this is one of your habits you want to break:

-brush your teeth after dinner / when you want to eat
-have a more substantial dinner
-close your kitchen and turn off the lights
-keep saying to yourself that after dinner, it’s not eating time

2. you don’t eat breakfast
i know, i know, you would rather get 10 more minutes of sleep. but is that 10 minutes of sleep worth not jump starting your metabolism? and who says breakfast takes 10 minutes? you can take it on the go too!

-prepare your breakfast the night before (e.g. overnight oats, a sandwich, etc.)
-take it on the go (e.g. smoothies)
-go to bed 5~10 minutes earlier!

3. you eat out all the time
it may not be ideal for you to carry around a lunchbag wherever you go, but it may be ideal for your waistline

-pack lunches the night before
-pack snacks
-if you have to eat out, look up nutritional information beforehand

4. you constantly binge on sugary foods
yup. i’ve been there. multiple times. and i know that some people can just eat a bite of a cupcake and stop, but that’s not me. i’m a more if-i-have-sugar-i-want-more-sugar type of person, ya know?

-substitute sugar for natural sugars
-eat a more substantial, balanced meal. KEY!
-stay away from sugary foods. PERIOD. so no “i’ll just have a bite!”
-think about / remind yourself what sugar does to you (i.e. throw you into a sugar coma) or DOESN’T do to you (i.e. no nutritional content, doesn’t fill you up, etc).

whether your body is healthy or not is dependent on you. if you take care of your body by exercising and eating right, your body will be healthy. if you don’t care about your body and eat junk all the time, your body won’t be healthy. as simple as that.

when you decide to eat crap, you’ll feel like crap, lose your fit body, and more.

when you decide to eat healthy, you’ll feel great, be energized, and get the results you want!

remember, every action has a consequence so make the right choices.

you CAN lose weight and become toned. you’re not stuck with your body as long as you’re willing to commit and change.

and even if you’re fit, once you start eating bad and stop working out, you’re going to lose your fit body.

so work for your body.

my mom told me this today. she was referring to my life, not to health / fitness / body but this totally fits.

why settle for a not-so-great health or mediocre body when you CAN achieve more?

extreme makeover: breakfast

i love extreme makeovers because of the amazing changes you can see between before and after. you’re like WOAH and the change is for the better, right?

so, i wanted to do an extreme makeover post on breakfast. it’s the most important meal of the day, didn’t you know? ;)

bread / toast

cereal

bagel

eggs

instead of using just 2-3 eggs, whether you’re making scrambled eggs or omelettes, use egg whites, egg beaters, of 1 egg + 2 whites

yogurt

**remember that “healthier” substitutes that i mention like low fat cream cheese, or turkey bacon are usually better for you. HOWEVER, you MUST READ the ingredients to see if they have weird chemicals / fillers (like sugar). why do you think i never suggest low-fat peanut butter? ;)

HAPPY HEALTHY EATING!

stay tuned for other extreme makeover posts :)

Zevia

DIET SODA. the big debate. people ask me all the time. can i drink diet soda? will that affect my diet? will that hinder my weightloss? now there are numerous studies that give different perspectives and opinions but i would just like to give you guys MY OPINION.

i used to drink coke zero all.the.time. because you know they were 0 calories, tasted good, and made me full. win win? not quite. as i did more “digging”, i learned that the chemicals in diet sodas can cause hormone imbalance, which can interfere with your weightloss because the hormones will affect different parts of your body that are responsible for burning fat, processing sugars, and more. that’s why i stopped drinking diet sodas SO FREQUENTLY. i have diet coke once in a while but that’s usually like once in a blue moon. however, if i’m thirsty and soda is the only option, i’ll grab the diet rather than the regular.

with that being said, i would like to introduce to you guys zevia.

what is zevia? from their website:
“Soda. Pretty plain and simply, Zevia is soda but better. Zevia was created with the miracle ingredient, stevia, which makes it all natural and zero calories. Never any sugar or artificial sweeteners mean it’s a healthier soda for you and those that you love.”

a lot of my recipes or the foods i eat have stevia, which is an ALL NATURAL sweetener from a plant that has 0 calories. and the other great thing about stevia is that it has no funky aftertaste like other sweeteners give you.

see? stellar nutritional values as well as stellar ingredients!

zevia can be found in a lot of stores like whole foods, kroger, hyvee, and more. you guys have got to try it! it tastes great and isn’t made up of fake chemicals. when you need that “afternoon pick-me-up”, or when you feel that i-want-soda urge, don’t reach for a can of coke or a bottle of mountain dew but reach for zevia.

you can check out their website here: www.zevia.com
they have TONS of flavors you can choose from!

p.s. my favorites are cream soda, grapefruit citrus, and grape!!!

self realization

i’ve just realized something. well actually i might have known it all along but i’ve just been reminded of it.

i have my best body in the summer. but gain weight during the winter. and one of the reasons may be that it’s cold outside and i don’t want to exercise as much but that’s not the main reason.

it’s my emotions.

i’ve talked about this with my mom and she’s helped me understand this a little bit better. i’ve been an international students ever since i was in 3rd grade so the only time i get to spend with my family is summer break. when i’m home with my parents, i feel satisfied with other parts of my life. i’m with my family and i feel content inside. but when i’m not with my parents, i realized that i feel a little empty inside and my mom asked if i try to fill that emptiness with food. i thought that was wrong but maybe she’s onto something.

also, when i was living with host families, i couldn’t control many aspects of my life since i couldn’t do what i want like i would when i’m with my parents. so i had “control issues”, which meant that i got obsessively controlling over my body. that backfired on me because i would eat controlled portions and eat extremely (too) clean and then when i’m exposed to my favorite foods, i would just go to town.

in the summer, i can totally be around my favorite foods and have perfect self control so why don’t i have the same thing now?

it was extremely frustrating. and then i found intuitive eating. it’s a new concept for me. like totally new. but basically here’s what intuitive eating about.

i took this from this site: http://www.intuitiveeating.org/content/what-intuitive-eating

Intuitive Eating Principles

1. Reject the Diet Mentality. Throw out the diet books and magazine articles that offer you false hope of losing weight quickly, easily, and permanently. Get angry at the lies that have led you to feel as if you were a failure every time a new diet stopped working and you gained back all of the weight. If you allow even one small hope to linger that a new and better diet might be lurking around the corner, it will prevent you from being free to rediscover Intuitive Eating.

2. Honor Your Hunger. Keep your body biologically fed with adequate energy and carbohydrates. Otherwise you can trigger a primal drive to overeat. Once you reach the moment of excessive hunger, all intentions of moderate, conscious eating are fleeting and irrelevant. Learning to honor this first biological signal sets the stage for re-building trust with yourself and food.

3. Make Peace with Food. Call a truce, stop the food fight! Give yourself unconditional permission to eat. If you tell yourself that you can’t or shouldn’t have a particular food, it can lead to intense feelings of deprivation that build into uncontrollable cravings and, often, bingeing When you finally “give-in” to your forbidden food, eating will be experienced with such intensity, it usually results in Last Supper overeating, and overwhelming guilt.

4. Challenge the Food Police. Scream a loud “NO” to thoughts in your head that declare you’re “good” for eating under 1000 calories or “bad” because you ate a piece of chocolate cake. The Food Police monitor the unreasonable rules that dieting has created . The police station is housed deep in your psyche, and its loud speaker shouts negative barbs, hopeless phrases, and guilt-provoking indictments. Chasing the Food Police away is a critical step in returning to Intuitive Eating.

5. Respect Your Fullness. Listen for the body signals that tell you that you are no longer hungry. Observe the signs that show that you’re comfortably full. Pause in the middle of a meal or food and ask yourself how the food tastes, and what is your current fullness level?

6. Discover the Satisfaction Factor. The Japanese have the wisdom to promote pleasure as one of their goals of healthy living In our fury to be thin and healthy, we often overlook one of the most basic gifts of existence—the pleasure and satisfaction that can be found in the eating experience. When you eat what you really want, in an environment that is inviting and conducive, the pleasure you derive will be a powerful force in helping you feel satisfied and content. By providing this experience for yourself, you will find that it takes much less food to decide you’ve had “enough”.

7. Honor Your Feelings Without Using Food. Find ways to comfort , nurture, distract, and resolve your issues without using food. Anxiety, loneliness, boredom, anger are emotions we all experience throughout life. Each has its own trigger, and each has its own appeasement. Food won’t fix any of these feelings. It may comfort for the short term, distract from the pain, or even numb you into a food hangover. But food won’t solve the problem. If anything, eating for an emotional hunger will only make you feel worse in the long run. You’ll ultimately have to deal with the source of the emotion, as well as the discomfort of overeating.

8. Respect Your Body. Accept your genetic blueprint. Just as a person with a shoe size of eight would not expect to realistically squeeze into a size six, it is equally as futile (and uncomfortable) to have the same expectation with body size. But mostly, respect your body, so you can feel better about who you are. It’s hard to reject the diet mentality if you are unrealistic and overly critical about your body shape.

9. Exercise—Feel the Difference. Forget militant exercise. Just get active and feel the difference. Shift your focus to how it feels to move your body, rather than the calorie burning effect of exercise. If you focus on how you feel from working out, such as energized, it can make the difference between rolling out of bed for a brisk morning walk or hitting the snooze alarm. If when you wake up, your only goal is to lose weight, it’s usually not a motivating factor in that moment of time.

10. Honor Your Health—Gentle Nutrition. Make food choices that honor your health and tastebuds while making you feel well. Remember that you don’t have to eat a perfect diet to be healthy. You will not suddenly get a nutrient deficiency or gain weight from one snack, one meal, or one day of eating. It’s what you eat consistently over time that matters, progress not perfection is what counts.

basically i’m saying that i need to work on my relationship with food. this might sound easy on paper but honestly i think it’s the hardest thing of life. but i think this will really help me.

that’s all for now. thanks for listening to my rambles. i’ll give you guys more updates later!
